This truly breaks my heart
I pledge to read the printed word
This is so sad :( Especially the last photo, that really got me :(
I just…. An eReader will never beat the smell, feel, weight and my love for the printed page. I love the look of books on shelves. We’re seeing the death of the printed word in favor of technology. As much as I love the internet and my laptop/phone, I will never stop loving books. I wish more people felt this way. </3
This summer has been a summer filled with travel, adventure and shenanigans abound for us here at The Chronos Society. How about you folks? We’re a bit sad it will be coming to an end shortly but that’s the problem with good times, they go by too quickly.
Here is a snapshot of our Captain playing at being a steampunk Tinkerbell of sorts from Gen Con 2011. A lot of her outfit came from Crimson Chain Leatherworks (or she made it herself!).
We look forward to getting back to business this winter to bring you reviews of all sorts of media and with news of what we’re up to next year! For now, feel free to use the ask function if you have any questions or comments for us!
So my friend Alan makes book covers. Here you have his Harry Potter set. Yes, you can buy these. They come with or without the books. Hardcover copies only. For more information, contact him at Alan@alanklem.com :]

We’re up to many new and exciting things. I know I keep promising updates but I promise we’re all quite busy. I will get to updating soon. The reviews of Escapement and Pinion have been put on hold for the moment. Do expect a review of Gail Carriger’s Heartless as soon as I can get my hands on it and Steampunk and Steampunk Reloaded as soon as I have the time to read them.
With the addition of moving and new jobs all around we’re finding time scarce to do much of anything productive online or in person for steampunk outside of costuming and going to cons to sell our goods. Rest assured, we aren’t dead and I’m hoping for a massive update soon! Until then, keep an eye on our facebook and twitter pages.
Hello lovely followers! I have updated our website into its MK II format! We now have a “Suggestion and Question” box. I’ll do my best to reply to all of them! As far as book reviews go, I’m right in the middle of furiously scribbling down several for you to enjoy. I plan on adding an archive page to our sidebar to give you easy access to all of our reviews. I also just picked up a myriad of new CDs at World Steam Expo so look forward to some new music reviews as well! I have a wonderful one featuring Abney Park still in the works and almost ready to reveal!
We’ve got several events happening this month. I’ll be a guest at a local convention called Kids Read Comics in Chelsea, MI this coming weekend! Next weekend, several of us will be attending JAFAX in Grand Rapids, MI (technically Allendale, MI). We will have an artist alley table there under Spooky Designs. Speaking of artist alley, several of us will again be manning the Spooky Designs table at Glass City Con in Toledo, OH (technically Perrysburg, OH) a couple of weekends after JAFAX!
Please be sure to come out and visit us if you’re able!

We would like to report that our Pool Party was a smashing success! Thank you to everyone who made it! The convention itself was even more of a smashing success! We were proud to be a part of such a groundbreaking event. We’re looking forward to returning next year as well!
We made a lot of new friends and we visited with many old ones. Look for new music/concert reviews in your future as well as new book reviews as we get back on track!
Mainspring Jay Lake
Rating: 7/10
Mr. Lake builds a brand new style of Earth in this series of novels. The Earth is divided by the Equatorial Wall, which is a gear splitting the Earth into North and South Hemispheres. Essentially, this gear is part of a complex system that keeps the world literally turning. The Northern Hemisphere contains England and America but they are still one in the same. The Southern Hemisphere is a wild and unexplored land that most people know nothing about. Usually no one crosses the Equatorial Wall and comes back.
The main character, Hethor, is visited by the Angel Gabriel. He is charged with the task of finding the Key Perilous to wind the Mainspring of the world to keep it turning. With Hethor being only 16, this is a large mission for him to take on. In the beginning he seems willing to accept the mission but also confused and slightly reluctant, due to his lack of world knowledge. Once the book takes off, high flying adventure abounds! Quite literally in fact!
Mr. Lake also wrote a new take on the Bible into this story. Including the “Brass Christ” and “Horofix” depicting Jesus dieing up on the Roman gear instead of a cross. It is an interesting and respectful take on the Bible that actually made me intrigued to learn more.
Hethor takes you on his journey across the globe and even over the Equatorial Wall on his search for the Key Perilous and the Mainspring. Even through all the danger and adventure, deep down the story is about a boy growing into a man and finding his true place in the world. Hethor does it quite marvelously at that!
I was rather impressed with the world building in this book. I feel parts of Hethor’s character development may have moved a bit too fast, but it was relatively satisfactory character development. I was entertained and my imagination was kept thoroughly engaged. If you’re looking for something to pick up at your local library or bookstore, I would recommend this to you!
This book is also part of a series; Mainspring, Escapement and Pinion are all in stores now! I am looking forward to reading the next installments myself!
As I promised, book reviews! I’ll add a link to the list of steampunk books we have reviewed to the side bar for easy access as well!
The Parasol Protectorate series Gail Carriger
Rating: 9/10
A strong heroine, high flying adventure, supernatural elements, steampunk, a dash of romance, Victorian fashion, culture and mannerisms are all alive and well in The Parasol Protectorate! Alexia Tarabotti is a strong minded woman who lives in a supernatural Victorian London. She has thoughts, opinions and interests, making her a robust and appealing female lead. She is a special kind of “supernatural” being who was born soulless; as the first title implies. Her two best friends are on opposite ends of the spectrum; one being a fabulously eccentric and fashionable vampire fop and the other being a delicate Lady with a penchant for buying strange hats. Alexia’s awareness of the world around her gets her into a lot of interesting (and very occasionally troubling) situations.
Armed with her sharp wit, intellect and her parasol, she takes on the supernatural world. (Although she does her best to stop for tea time. It wouldn’t be civilized if she didn’t!)
If you enjoy any of the aforementioned attributes, I HIGHLY recommend you check out Ms. Carriger’s Parasol Protectorate series!
Soulless, Changeless and Blameless are in bookstores now (that is also their chronological order). Heartless drops July 1st, 2011!
Those wings are so amazing… omg
If I had them Id wear them everyday !
I have a new re-imagining of those pesky clock faeries thanks to this wonderful costume!
Stuck With You - Voltaire
You’re a slob, it’s such a bore,
Your underwear strewn on the floor.
And you’re a packrat, most extreme,
our house is full of magazines.
The toilet’s broke, and yet I bet,
his majesty ain’t fixed it yet.
You’re one to talk, sleepyhead,
and get your fat ass out of bed.
Oh but in the eyes of god,
We said our vows before the pews.
“Not until death may we part”
So until then I’m stuck with you.
You swore that you’d be true to me,
But gave be infidelity.
Why should I give a tinker’s cuss?
She was your sister, what’s the fuss?
Well then, let’s propose a truce.
What’s good for gander is good for goose.
Hey now that’s different, you took to bed,
My favorite dog and all my friends!
Oh but in the eyes of god,
We said our vows before the pews.
“not until death may we part”
So until then I’m stuck with you.
Oh but in the eyes of god,
We said our vows before the pews.
“not until death may we part”
This is my curse, I said “I do.”
Better or worse I’m stuck with you.
You poked my eye, I wear a patch.
I should’ve given you one to match.
Did you forget, you forgot me back?
You chopped my thumb off with an axe.
You drowned my kittens one by one.
You looked like you were having fun.
You stabbed my mother, in the chest
With a Korean bayonet!
Oh but in the eyes of god,
We said our vows before the pews.
“Not until death may we part”
So until then I’m stuck with you.
Oh but in the eyes of god,
We said our vows before the pews.
“Not until death may we part”
This is my curse, I said “I do.”
Lest you die first I’m stuck with you.
And now I lie here in the grave.
I pray to god my soul to save.
And in the darkness of the tomb,
I’m glad I’m lying next to you.
And as I lay here 6 feet down
My body buried under ground.
In this dank, and dreary cold,
I’m just glad I’m not alone.
Oh but in the eyes of god,
We said our vows before the pews.
“Not until death may we part”
So until then I’m stuck with you.
Oh but in the eyes of god,
We said our vows before the pews.
“Not until death may we part”
I’m not sad I said, “I do.”
I’m just glad I was stuck with you.
I feel like this is the ultimate marriage song…. Seriously lol.
